Electrocardiogram (ECG)
What is an Electrocardiogram?
An electrocardiogram, or ECG, is a quick, safe, and painless test that records the electrical activity of your child’s heart. The ECG machine prints this activity onto special paper, creating a tracing that helps our cardiologists understand how the heart is working.
What to Expect During the Procedure
Stickers (Electrodes)
-
We place 10 small stickers (called electrodes) on your child’s chest, arms, and legs.
-
Each sticker is connected to the ECG machine with a clip and wire.
-
The stickers are gentle and easy to remove — they do not cause pain.
The Test
-
Once the electrodes are in place, the ECG begins.
-
The test itself takes only a few minutes.
-
The most important part is for your child to lie still while the recording is made.
-
We understand this can be challenging, so you are welcome to help distract your child with a favorite toy, a video on your phone, or any other comfort technique.
After the Test
-
When the recording is complete, the ECG machine prints out a tracing of your child’s heart rhythm.
-
One of our pediatric cardiologists will carefully review the results.
